Was it a good idea to rename the Burj Dubai to the 'Burj Khalifa'

It was a memorable occasion, it took almost 6 years to build and is the tallest man made building ever constructed.  It consists of around 160 storeys is over 800 metres tall and cost over $1.5 billion.

Now with the property market in Dubai like a yoyo, I as an absolute Dubai fanatic was pleased to finally see the 'Burj Dubai' unveiled to the world.  Not only is this an absolute engineering masterpiece, the country has yet another skyscraper that it can boast about and probably be its iconic landmark.  It has also proven to the world that it can rival the best in terms of construction.

So as I was watching the highlights, I was astonished to hear that this was now being called the Burj Khalifa.  Now those of you that have been following the trials and tribulations of what's been happening in the region know that Dubai is potentially bankrupt and doesn’t have a penny (so we are let to believe by the media).  Now there's plenty of conspiracy theories out there, but my question is why did they have to name this tower after the current ruler of the UAE?  Is it because Abu Dhabi is currently bankrolling Dubai or is it because Dubai wanted to show its appreciation of its capital city?  Hmmmm, I'm not too sure what to think.  As I mentioned above, I absolutely love Dubai and Abu Dhabi but even I was a bit annoyed to hear that they named it what they did.  At least try and call it after Sheikh Zayed who was the founder of the nation or someone else.

Anyway, lets hope that this launch is a catalyst to the UAE's success.

Onwards and upwards.

It is a magnificent building. Maybe he asked for the building to be named after him, who knows? Good hub.

The main reason is the builders owe khalifa a lot of money and it was one call before the innauguration that the name was changed. I was given to understand that the builders are going to repay the amount and rename it as BurjDubai in the coming year.

I think it is something to do with Abu Dhabi giving them the financial support for the economy and the recent issues they had. However, I still think its an engineering marvel :-)

Tom,

Lol, I totally agree, Abu Dhabi seems to keep on coming to Dubai's recsue. The question is though, how long can they carry on. DIC seems to be really struggling with paying back the several billion they owe.

Maybe they might rename DIC to ABIC :-)

Thanks again for your comments.

I've been there- but gosh , I could think of more interesting things to do. As for the rates that are charged to go and see the top... It's a rip off !!!
